World Tourism Day 2021 – MacroTraveller

As the covid-19 has bought the world to a standstill, the pandemic has made both developed and developing economies a massive socio-economic impact making it harder for countries to recover from the losses that a microscopic organism has bought.

This is the reason why many countries are opening up their borders to recover from the losses which lockdown and curfews have bought.

This year, world tourism day is celebrated on the pillar where nobody is left behind as the world begins to open up again and looking forward to seeing how the future looks. Additionally, this day is to let people know about the importance of preserving and promoting culture and heritage all around the world.

History

World tourism day is celebrated annually across the world on September 27 where on this day in the year 1970, the Statutes of the United Nations World Tourism Organization were adopted which are considered a milestone in global tourism.

The statutes paved a way for the establishment of UNWTO and from September 27, 1980, onwards UNWTO celebrated their first World Tourism Day which has been continued till today.

Significance

The main significance of world tourism day is to raise awareness on how tourism is affecting the social, cultural, political and economic values of the international community. During the current pandemic period, it is important to raise awareness about the tourism sector given that 90% of world heritage sites closed as a result of the pandemic last year and young people in rural communities were unemployed.

World Tourism Day “is the global observance day fostering awareness of tourism’s social, cultural, political and economic value and the contribution that the sector can make towards reaching the Sustainable Development Goals.” According to UNWTO.

World Tourism Day 2021

“Tourism for Inclusive Growth”. Is the theme of World Tourism Day 2021 where this year it is designated in such a matter that there is such an opportunity to look beyond tourism statistics and acknowledge that, behind every number, there is a person.

“UNWTO ensures every part of the sector has a say in its future – including communities, minorities, youth and those who would otherwise be at risk of being left behind,” said a statement from UNWTO.
