Atlanta Spa Shooter Robert Aaron Long Formally Indicted On Murder Charges—Prosecutor Also Seeking Hate Crime Charges & The Death Penalty – The Shade Room

#Roommates, back in March the nation was shocked when Robert Aaron Long tragically murdered several Atlanta spa workers who were mostly of Asian descent—he was quickly hit with multiple murder charges, but now his legal troubles have gotten worse. According to new reports, Robert Aaron Long has been officially indicted on murder charges for one of the separate shooting incidents and could possibly be facing the death penalty and hate crime charges.

@APNews reports, Robert Aaron Long, 22,  has now been indicted by a Fulton County grand jury for the murders of four of the eight people he killed back in March while embarking on a mass shooting spree at three Atlanta-area spas. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis also filed official court documents stating that she intends to seek both hate crime charges against Long and also the death penalty. Georgia’s recent hate crime law states that after a person is convicted of an underlying crime, a jury must determine whether it’s a hate crime—which carries an additional penalty.

In the new indictment, Robert Aaron Long is charged with four counts of murder, four counts of felony murder, five counts of assault with a deadly weapon, four counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and one count of domestic terrorism. On March 16th, Long murdered Suncha Kim, 69; Soon Chung Park, 74; Hyun Jung Grant, 51; and Yong Ae Yue, 63. The indictment is only for the four murders that happened at two spas in the metro Atlanta area, not the shooting deaths in Cherokee County, which is northwest of the city, that claimed the lives of Xiaojie “Emily” Tan, 49; Daoyou Feng, 44; Delaina Yaun, 33; and Paul Michels, 54.

A separate grand jury in Cherokee County will determine the charges against Long for the spa shootings that killed four people and wounded one additional person. As we previously reported, Atlanta authorities stated that Robert Aaron Long told them that his motivation for the murders was because he suffered from a sex addiction—and believed that the spas were too much temptation for him and they should be eliminated.

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms fired back at suggestions from Long that the spas had involvement in sex work. “[These spas are] legally operating businesses that have not been on our radar. We are not about to get into victim blaming, victim shaming here.”

Following the news of the tragic murder spree, the hashtag #StopAsianHate began to trend on social media, with notable figures such as Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris speaking out against the violence.
