Transitions: Wake Forest U. Selects Next President, 2 Presidents Named in City U. of New York System

CHIEF EXECUTIVES
Appointments
Fernando Delgado, executive vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Minnesota at Duluth, has been named president of the City University of New York‘s Herbert H. Lehman College. He will succeed José Luis Cruz, who left to become provost of the City University of New York. .

Judith Gay, vice president for strategic initiatives and chief of staff for the Community College of Philadelphia, has been named interim president of the new Erie County Community College.

Bashar Hanna, president of Bloomsburg University, has been named interim president of Lock Haven University. He will replace Robert Pignatello, who will join the Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education Office of the Chancellor as senior adviser for integration strategy. He will also remain as president of Bloomsburg.

Larry D. Johnson Jr., president of Phoenix College, has been named president of Stella and Charles Guttman Community College.

L. Gregory Jones, dean of the Divinity School at Duke University, has been named president of Belmont University. He will succeed Bob Fisher in June.

Kathryn A. Morris, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Butler University, has been named president of St. Lawrence University. She will succeed William L. Fox, who plans to retire.

Susan R. Wente, provost and vice chancellor at Vanderbilt University, will become president of Wake Forest University on July 1. She will succeed Nathan O. Hatch, who plans to retire.

Joseph Zimmer, provost and vice president for academic affairs at St. Bonaventure University, has been named acting president after Dennis DePerro was hospitalized for Covid-19.

Resignations
Steve M. Dorman, president of Georgia College and State University since 2012, plans to step down on September 1.

Kenneth Evans, president of Lamar University since 2013, plans to retire on June 30.

Retirements
Tim Foster, president of Colorado Mesa University since 2004, plans to retire on June 30.

Sister Carol Jean Vale, president of Chestnut Hill College since 1992, plans to retire in June 2022.

Liz Tovar, interim associate vice president for diversity, equity, and inclusion at the University of Iowa, has been named executive officer for diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Bernadette Russell, vice president of e-learning and instructional technology and provost of the Boca Raton campus at Palm Beach State College, retired in December.

Tanya Boone, associate dean in the School of Social Sciences and Education at California State University at Bakersfield, has been named dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at the University of South Carolina-Upstate.

Carla Brodley, dean of the Khoury College of Computer Sciences at Northeastern University, has been appointed as the inaugural dean of inclusive computing at the Northeastern Center for Inclusive Computing.

Wendy Cadge, senior associate dean for strategic initiatives and division head for the social sciences at Brandeis University, will become dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences on June 1.

Jodi Eastberg, executive director of the Research Center for Women and Girls and the Center for Academic Excellence at Alverno College, has been named dean of professional and graduate studies at the college.

Nita Evans, faculty chair for the master’s in social impact program at Claremont Lincoln University, has been named dean of academic affairs.

Laurie Anne Ferguson, dean of the College of Nursing and Health and director of the School of Nursing at Loyola University in New Orleans, has been named the founding dean of the new School of Nursing at Emory & Henry College.

Vincent Guilamo-Ramos, a professor and associate vice provost for mentoring and outreach programs at New York University, will become dean of the School of Nursing and vice chancellor for Nursing Affairs at Duke University on July 1.

Darlene Marnich, a professor and chair in the School of Education at Point Park University, has been named founding dean of the School of Education.

Ramón Rivera-Servera, chair of the department of performance studies and the department of theater in the School of Communication at Northwestern University, will become dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Texas at Austin July 1.

Resignations
Renée A. Middleton, dean of the Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education at Ohio University, plans to step down at the end of June.

Marcia L. Sells, dean of students at Harvard Law School, will leave to become the first chief diversity officer at the New York Metropolitan Opera.

James Shanahan, the founding dean of The Media School at Indiana University at Bloomington, plans to step down July 31.

Regina Vasilatos-Younken, vice provost for graduate education and dean of the Graduate School at Pennsylvania State University at University Park, plans to retire on December 31.

FACULTY
Appointments
Arjun Appadurai, a professor in media, culture, and communication and senior fellow at the Institute for Public Knowledge at New York University, will join the Bard Graduate Center as a professor in July.

Robert A. DeLeo, speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, has been named a university fellow for public life at Northeastern University.

Retirements
Robert Schuyler, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania who faced criticism for his use of a Nazi phrase and salute during an online conference last month, has retired.

DEATHS
Andrew Brooks, a research professor in the department of genetics at Rutgers University at New Brunswick, died of a heart attack on January 23. He was 51. Brooks was chief operating officer and director of technology development at Rutgers University Cell and DNA Repository
Infinite Biologics and led the development of the Covid-19 saliva test.

Christina Crosby, a professor of English and feminist, gender, and sexuality studies at Wesleyan University, died on January 5. She was 67. A 2003 cycling accident left her paralyzed, and she later wrote an unflinching account of her experience in the memoir A Body, Undone (2016).

John Pierce Watkins, a president emeritus of California University of Pennsylvania, died on January 28. He was 89. Watkins led the university, where he started as a professor of English, from 1977 until 1992.
